Designing for Atmosphere: Our Approach to the Morphett Arms Hotel Dining & Gaming Spaces

For the Morphett Arms Hotel, our design intent was clear: create a dining and gaming experience that feels warm, contemporary, and effortlessly comfortable. Every material, curve, and finish was selected to support a cohesive atmosphere that invites guests to settle in and stay a while.

We worked with a palette of soft, layered textures—upholstered seating in muted blues and mauves, tactile wall finishes, and natural timber detailing. The forms are intentionally rounded and generous, helping to soften the space and encourage a more relaxed, fluid flow between zones.

Lighting was key to setting the tone. We incorporated soft, integrated lighting beneath banquettes, around plinths, and behind drapery to create a gentle, ambient glow throughout. These subtle touches add depth and warmth without competing with the overall design.

Materiality was central to our approach. Marble tabletops with striking natural veining bring a sense of quiet luxury, balanced by the honesty of timber and woven upholstery. We avoided overly polished finishes, instead opting for textures that feel grounded and inviting.

The dining area is anchored by a designer pendant system and full-height drapery, offering a sense of intimacy. The custom made dining table allows big groups to inhabit the space, providing a more elevated dining experience.

In this project, we weren’t aiming for bold statements—we were focused on flow, comfort, and pleasant dining experience where the design supports the mood, without overwhelming it. The result is a space that feels fresh, tactile, and inherently welcoming.
